Performance

Starting Blocks

In track running, racers use starting blocks to get up to speed.

At the start, there is an of explosion of energy with everyone racing to the finish line. The starting blocks give them a solid foundation so they can put their full force into forward momentum.

At the start of a software project, we don't think it's a race. But by the end, we're definitely sprinting to the finish as the deadline comes to a close. Again, a solid start and earlier traction can return huge results.

Find your flow

The Flow state is when your mind is focused and you're seamlessly going from one task to the next, getting a lot of work done.

What is flow?

When you're riding a bike, your motions are rhythmic and repetitive. You can pedal faster or slower, but either way your movement is efficiently moving you forward and you can feel the progress.

As creative professionals, we could be in the flow, or dragging our feet and the day's output will be wildly different.

High performance

Do you have high performing employees? What about a high performing team?

What does performance really mean, and how do we measure and improve?

What are the drivers and inhibitors of performance? How can you increase your own performance, and the performance of a team?

When I think about performance, I consider sports cars. They are designed to be fast and sleek, real outliers on the road and capable of doing everything they appear to.

Never enough time

There is not enough time to get everything done.

For your personal projects, your progress is limited by the time you put in.

For professional contracts, your time is limited by the available budget.

Achieving maximum results means navigating your options intelligently and making decisions that lead to higher quality features and less effort.
